Club World Cup: A trophy missing in our Cabinet

The Club World Cup has commenced in Qatar and the first game of the competition held in the UAE (United Arab Emirates) saw Al Jazira who are the hosts defeat As Pirae champions of the OFC by four goals to one.

The competition which started in the year 2000 has been held every year ever since and the participants are made up of Champions from each region. Africa, Europe, Oceania, North and South America as well as the winner of the host nation’s league.

This year the teams participating are:

Palmeiras (Champions of CONMEBOL)

Chelsea (Champions of UEFA)

Al Hilal (Champions of AFC)

AL Ahly (Champions of CAF)

Monterrey (Champions of CONCACAF)

As Pirae (Champions of OFC)

… and the host Al Jazira of the UAE.

Chelsea football club of England are participating in this competition only for the second time having won the UEFA champions league back in May. The FIFA club World Cup is a trophy still missing in the cabinet of the blues and they stand a strong chance of finally adding this “unique” trophy to the already occupied cabinet.

The team led by Thomas Tuchel would arrive the UAE refreshed after observing an unusual winter break. In reference to the FIFA Club World Cup, the German tactician did say; “It is a big opportunity to win an extraordinary trophy which is far from daily business and that is why we will do anything to take the chance to make it happen”.

The last time Chelsea participated was also the first and one which ended in disappointment as the team then led by Rafael Benitez were shocked 1-0 by Corinthians of Brazil. This time around, the blues would be looking to make amends by beating all comers to lift the trophy for the very first time in history.

Chelsea’s quest to win the Club World Cup will begin on Wednesday when they take on Saudi Arabian champions Al Hilal in the semi-final.
