Paul Mitchell on Chelsea new owners radar

In The Athletic’s Monday morning column which is reported by David Ornstein, it has been revealed that 2 of the remaining 3 bidders are closely monitoring Paul Mitchell’s situation at Monaco with a view to potentially approaching him.

Who is Paul Mitchell?

Mitchell is a technical director at Monaco and previously has been at Spurs, Southampton and Leipzig, where he has been credited with the likes of signing Heung Min Son, Dele Alli, Dani Olmo, Ademola Lookman, Sadio Mane and Nkunku, amongst several others.

What does this mean for Chelsea?

If he were to join Chelsea, Mitchell would likely take up the role previously led by Michael Emenalo who oversaw football operations at the club before leaving in 2017.

Chelsea have not replaced emenalo since, leaving footballing operations and signings to be led by the ever trusted Marina Granovskia, who’s future is understood to be under increasing doubt after the departure of long time owner and friend Roman Abramovich. As reported before here on Chelseafc365.com, Marina has been approached by the shortlisted bidders to stay at the club, but she has not given any guarantees to the bidders.

The final remaining bidders seemingly looking at someone fresh for footballing operations comes to excitement to Chelsea fans, who’s signings as of recent years have been extremely hit and miss. Furthermore, a lot of fans are unhappy with how Chelsea spend their money, citing expensive purchases of Romelu Lukaku ( £100m ) and Kepa Arrizabalaga ( £72m ) as panic buys after missing out on Erling Haaland and Allison respectively.

One thing we do know for certain is that Thomas Tuchel holds a good relationship with Granovskia, stating several times in the past few months that he enjoys the good structure currently in place at Chelsea. Chelsea fans should not worry too much about Tuchel’s future however, as he has also stated that he is open to change and adaptation.

One suspects that as long as Tuchel is given enough backing by the new owners to consistently challenge Manchester City and Liverpool in the league, then he will remain a happy camper, he enjoys a fantastic relationship with Chelsea fans after only arriving in January 2021.
