Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea FC

Lampard vs RooneyIt was a well deserved draw for a Chelsea side that won the first two home league games. The Blues’ went to Old Trafford and got a share of a point from the Champions playing their first game at home and we could have won the game if not for our attacking misplays. As, Jose stated after wards in post match comments, the creative players that he started with in attacking areas could have done better to find a space and score.
But, that didn’t happen as our striking department is once again highlighted as the main weakness in a side that battled to get a point at Old Trafford. Now, let’s analyze how our players performed and how Rooney fared in such tough situations going into the match….
Manchester United:
David De Gea: 7.0
Pretty average performance by the Spaniard as he was not put in much trouble by many attempts at goal by Chelsea. Oscar got a few on target but, straight into De Gea to stop it from going in.
Jones: 6.0
Phil Jones once again played at Right back as to clearly mark the danger of Eden Hazard threatening the United defense. But, compare his performance against that of Ivanovic through the match and it’s less than stellar. Hazard was stopped more over by Valencia but, Jones neither performed well defensively nor was an attacking threat.
Ferdinand: 7.0
Rio Ferdinand could have been exposed easily by Schurrle if Lampard and other midfielders made some precise through balls on the way of Schurrle. But, didn’t have any danger against him as Chelsea attacking 3rd was not at their best.
Vidic: 7.0
Pretty much similar from the United defenders as Rio and his captain didn’t have much work to do against our strikers. Stellar and average to be fair to them.
Evra: 7.0
Evra was caught diving and trying to get free kicks few times as he was defensively covered well by De Bruyne. Jose stated after wards he dropped Mata for that position as to better mark Evra’s attacking threat. Job Well Done KdB!
Carrick: 8.0
Showed how much United will rely on him this season with a canny display in front of the back four. Did not allow Chelsea’s attacking midfielders time or space.
Cleverly: 6.0
Steady rather than particularly effective. Took the easy option too often as the weight of the occasion appeared to curb his ambition. Poor display coming up against a fearsome attacking 3 of Chelsea.
Valencia: 6.0
Although he threatened Ashley Cole and stopped Hazard by marking him really well, the end results of his crosses or passes were just awful!

Wayne Rooney: 9.0
Arguably the best player on the pitch by many fans who watched including pundits on Sky Sports. He played his heart out on the pitch for United despite being in difficult circumstances going into this game. There was a clear interest in him from Chelsea and he was cheered by both sets of fans at Old Trafford. Chelsea fans were chanting, “Wayne Rooney, we will see you next week!”. Looked eager, his work-rate was excellent and some of his second-half passing was top-drawer.
Danny Welbeck: 7.0
Got the nod to start on the left flank ahead of Giggs but looked more effective when he wandered into central areas. Sent two shots wildly over the bar early in the second half. Subbed with 12 minutes left.
Robin Van Persie: 7.0
Fizzed with energy and menace but the chances did not fall his way. Shot into the side netting from a tight angle early on before sending a tricky header over the bar.
Subs:
Ashley Young: 6.5
His crossing from the right was more productive than Valencia’s had been. Still didn’t make much of an impact, poor on the defensive and pace that Valencia was good at before him.
Ryan Giggs: N/A
Was quite on the left flank as we had none other than Branslav Ivanovic in that position to guard and silence the United veteran.
Chelsea FC:
Petr Cech: 8.0
Would have expected to be more involved in such a demanding away fixture. Only had one save to make in the first 70 minutes and dealt comfortably with every high ball and long-range effort.
Branslav Ivanovic: 9.0
Chelsea’s Mr Dependable was as solid as ever. In addition to stopping the threat of Welbeck and Evra from the left, he dealt capably well with Robin Van Perise’s runs into the box.
Gary Cahill: 8.0
Good positioning and dominant in the air as he managed to win 5 out of 5 of his aerial duels contested. Almost gave Chelsea the lead with a powerful long range strike on to De Gea.
John Terry: 9.0
The Barclays man of the match award receiver John Terry shown us his outstanding positioning and leadership skills. He intercepted a lot of balls which could resulted in Van Persie or Rooney finding the back of the net. Well deserved plaudit to JT!
Ashley Cole: 8.0
He dealt capably well with Valencia most of the game to stop his crosses and runs. Booked in the 15th minute for a mistimed tackle on van Persie but it did not unsettle the experienced left-back. Made the most of a penalty claim in the second half when he was tugged back by Jones.
Ramires: 7.5
No Makelele as a CDM, but his versatility and energy never cease to impress. He pressed well against Rooney as the English CF was playing as CAM behind Van Persie. Great performance!
Lampard: 7.0
Anchored the midfield steadily on a night when he was clearly under strict instructions to keep his position and not bomb forward. He managed to misplace a lot of passes on to the way of Schurrle upfront. Could have done better, but still good performance.
Oscar: 7.0
Dropped very deep at times to instigate attacks as Mourinho showed how much faith he has in the No.11 to orchestrate the play. Had Chelsea’s two best first-half chances but both were dealt comfortably with by De Gea.
De Bruyne: 6.5
Didn’t do most of his attacking duties but, tracked and marked Evra really well as Jose put him in ahead of Mata for that clear reason. Shown his dedication by playing and keeping his cool after he got booked for a collusion with RVP. Typical ref at Old trafford while we play United
Eden Hazard: 7.0
Didn’t do well as we would expect him in a big game like this. Could have dealt better against Valencia and Jones, could have been a difference maker between the two sides.
Andre Schurrle: 8.5
Surprisingly given the task of leading the line, the German was too isolated although he demonstrated a stunning burst of pace. Moved out to the right flank before he was subbed shortly before the end. His work rate was just pure brilliance put on by the German. Covered a lot of ground from both set of players.
Subs:
Fernando Torres: 7.0
Had a few good runs but his threat diminished the closer he got to the penalty box.
John Obi Mikel: N/A
Helped Chelsea protect their point for the last four minutes. Will likely be involved against an attacking Bayern as Mourinho will more than likely go for a defensive, counter attack football against the Bavarian’s on Friday.
Cesar Azpilicueta: N/A
Replaced Hazard in added time as maybe Jose thought the Belgian would be burnt out in the closing stages of the game. Didn’t have enough time to make an impact.
360 Man Of the Match: Our nominations are between our captain John Terry and United’s center forward Wayne Rooney. Both players were clearly their teams’ best players and we’ll leave this one up to our readers to vote…

[polldaddy poll=7349763]

360 Flop of the Match: Antonio Valencia. Poor display and for more reasons stated above.

  1. Disgusting perfomance….this ”not so special one” has brought back boring football n this time it’s worse since we have a bucketload of creative talent

    • Anonymous

we have a whole bench full of talent only to turn them into defenders that is all he will do limit their attacking play with his park the bus tactics its an insult to our 3 strikers that we played with a false 9 last night and just bought another attacking midfielder rather than looking for a striker other than Rooney just shows how smart they are

  2. Under benitez, we saw a free flowing football but now, it’s all about mourinho boring style..wht was mata doing on the bench yestarday?

    • Anonymous

“it’s all about mourinho boring style”: did you watch our last game of the Europa?? he was most boring than ever and was under benitez.
Mata is poor defensively and he tends to get robbed off of the ball too easily: we saw it last Wednesday. Mata didn’t help the defence and was losing the ball all time.

    • Anonymous

i agree with you 200% that was poor football and tactics yesterday and all this talk about mata not being able to do defensive work is nonsense it was never an issue for the past 2 seasons now Jose shows up and the chelsea fans see it as a problem don’t need 10 men defending and for those that are saying Jose knows best then u are like lost sheep being lead astray he doesn’t know best because regardless of if he can do a defensive duty stats never lie and for the past 2 seasons they will show that whenever mata isn’t in that teams chelsea don’t look the same and all the talk about mata losing the ball oscar, lampard and ramires lose the ball often and have alot of misplaced passes and they still play and i know their is now coach unless he is bias or from brazil that would play oscar before mata in that 10 role oscar can’t and doesn’t bring what mata brings and it is something we need back in our team previous game when torres started he barely got any service from oscar and the others, we went united last year with the same RVP and Rooney and played attacking football and we won and he comes with his park the bus tactics and for those that are saying that he needs time ancelotti took over madrid around the same time as mou took over chelsea and he has kaka who mou was saying wasn’t fit etc playing good football again and he has the madrid team running like a smooth engine so that is a poor excuse all chelsea needed to work on was our defensive work and find a way to help our strikers score more goals he didn’t have to overall our entire style of play that is where he went wrong.

Mata is poor defensively and he tends to get robbed off of the ball too easily: we saw it last Wednesday. Mata didn’t help the defence and was losing the ball all time. He didn’t contribute to much against villa match. Last year we got the same problem until RDM ask him to take 2 weeks vacancy. After that, he came back fresh and ready to go. All people who are cry Mata, did you see last game??

    • Anonymous

and so is lampard and he still plays ramires is not much better than mata he is improving will give him that but both ramires and lampard have alot of ill-timed tackles on players and they still play, u talking about losing the ball oscar, lampard and ramires give away the ball and over the last 3 games everytime lampard tries to play the ball from his position to the attacking players when they are in an advance position he gives it away even the player summary stated it, so what ,mata doesn’t defend name another player in the chelsea squad who can make something happen like he can and what he can’t do in defence he more than makes up for it in attack doesn’t see why all of sudden we are talking about his defensive work when it wasn’t a big issue for us for the past 2 seasons and now all of a sudden Jose shows up and it’s a problem some of you chelsea fans are like sponges to Jose just soaking up everything he says like it is golden you guys need to wake up

  4. please jose we fans are not happy wit u seriously.please what happen to milkel and mata that u did not play them?this is my question

  5. forever blue

    Some people cannot be pleased
(hull, A.villa, man utd and bayern) in the space of 14 days. Man UTD had 8 days to prepare for this match. Chelsea had 4 days.
An experimental 11 vs UTD finest.
    Jose knows job.

  6. Vaakmeisster

I do not agree with ashley Cole’s rating. To me he was shit. Only a poor Valencia ensured he wasn’t punished.

  7. forever blue

All those talking about fat benitez. It took benitez alot of time to get his team selection right.
Here is mourinho’s first three game and he hasn’t taken ”cfc from 4 points behind UTD to 14 points’ behind’
JOSE – ”If you cannot win, do not loose”.

    • Anonymous

what are you talking about it didn’t take benitez long don’t hate on the guy and he did a good job for the time he was there when he came in our season was in trouble stop being critical of the guy because you don’t like him

    • completely agree forever blue, were not gunna blitz a team 6-0 every game . Got to play ugly sometimes.#DoNotLoose.

  8. oyedeleoriyomi

Itz a gud display by the defence,i beliv mourinho is the boss he knwz wat he is doing and a job wel done by my man of the match J.T

    • Anonymous

that was a good job because we didn’t lose but it was poor team selection by mourinho and poor game tactic and he doesn’t know what he is doing some of you chelsea fans agree with everything he does blindly there is no way that u can have your best player for the past 2 seasons on the bench utter nonsense mata can’t defend but he sure makes up for it will his attacking display and you don’t need 10 men defending in a football game he has tinkered with our free flowing football and now our team looks really poor alot more misplaced passes than last year.

  9. Don’t expect us 2 start playing like bayern or barca as all d attacking players in those clubs are more mature and experience nd playing 4 big clubs.Excuse me,we played wif kids(haz 22 osc 21 shur 22 nd bry 21) at OT and came out wif a draw.Although d attacking play was shit bcoz Hazard Oscar lack undastnd btwn since last season. Then add wif shurrle and kdb which both are new nd trying 2 gel.We can’t expect much more than a draw 4rm a Mature nd highly experience team like Man Utd squad .

    • Anonymous

have you seen what you have typed those kids as you have called them have been playing for country for a while now so it’s not to say they just came onto the scene and your excuse for the way we are playing isn’t a good one here is why firstly oscar and hazard played at least 40-50 games between them last season and you are telling me that after 1 whole season playing with someone u don’t have an understand of how they play poor excuse, secondly with the exception of de bruyne and schurrle both hazard and oscar played against united 5 times last season and we beat them knocked them out of 2 cups so what is your point, de bruyne was rated so highly during his spell at bremen that dortmund wanted him that should say enough of how good he was while on loan so don’t give the excuse about them being kids these are young players who have shown for country and club what they can do they have done it before and i am sure if we played with more freedom last night we could have gotten a win from that game we weren’t playing barca last night that we could have lived with those defensive tactics this is a team we have played hard ball with them over the last few seasons we played them and if i am not mistaken we have beaten them more than they have beaten us over the last few seasons so to go into the game and play for a draw was poor tactics and planning 3 points should have been plan A and a draw plan B not a draw as plan A and a win as plan B

Boring Boring football type of play is Back! Hallelujah! The special one is back! Mourinho cannot offer anything special to Chelsea’s style of play. The same Old song.

  11. Aristo David,Nigeria

lets luk @ it critically.d 1st half was poor bcos d delivery 4rm lamps & ramires was poor.dat was d point of startin…

  12. Anonymous

to be honest my assessment for 3matches; agnst Hull we played gud futball esp 1st half but 2nd half was poor performance; against Villa, we played Bad almost there were no coordination btn player we couldnt see passing football n long passes not completed; But against United we played good football, well defensive and coordination btn midfielders upfront but there should be more clinical infront of goal, Oscar, KDB, Schurrle n Hazard b4 shooting to the Goal look to other sides n give pass to ur mate n will b easy scoring.

  13. Aristo David,Nigeria

d pacy schurrle anyway.also anytym hazard got d ball,2 manU playas were on him.dis was a nyc tactic 4rm moyes as it…

  14. Aristo David,Nigeria

    reduced his movement.den also d team didn’t have cohesion.most tyms it was a disjointed display 4rm d lads.a point I…

  15. Aristo David,Nigeria

know mourinho has taken note of.lets wait 4 d team, they’ll get better.

  16. It was a wonderful performance from our blue boys. We have a more important match to play this friday. There is still 35 matches to play this season, so chelsea did the right thing. In jose we trust. KTBFFH

  17. Watching Mou’s Chelsea play long balls which often dan nt evaded our attacking players yesternight was a sorry sight.
To see a midfield made up of Ramires (Short), Oscar (short), KDB (Short), Hazard (short) n Lampard play long balls ws nt palatable.
We had a group of technically gifted footballers except Ramires on d pitch but we still played defensive counter attack. We forgot dt dere ws no Drogba on d pitch n kept passing long n very inaccurate passes.
A Man Utd midfield made up of Carrick, Cleverly, and Valencia easily dominated possession.
@ a point dey monopolised possession.
Chelsea played ugly through and through, no pattern, no sense of direction. If this team was under Rafa, we wud v cursed n ask for his immediate sack. I hope Mou gets his act right, I haven’t been impressed by d 3 games so far, save for the opening 20 mins against Hull City (we were dominant n dangerous with an eye for goal).

90 minutes i will never get back.how about that.boring match. we cant keep playng KDB bcoz he can defend.get mata back

  20. Vaibhav Kumble

M sorry. But I have to say this. Ppl who are questioning Mou’s tactics and labelling Benitez as better than him ARE BIG IDIOTS. u dont realise this is only the 3rd match we have played. First two games we were all over the opponent. And u must be Barca fans to talk about beautiful football and boring football. All I care about is winning football. Did you even read his post match conference. He was clear about the fact that they are young players still trying to improve. They are still trying to get Mourinho’s tactics into place and also that he wants his team to learn how to defend well when you dont have the ball. All of these were the plus points. Yes the match was boring. But I wouldn’t be surprised when Man U come to the bridge and we are all over them. And our players dint play that well either. So thry got to learn a lot. M gonna be laughing on the faces of these idiots when we win the league by playing entertaining football. Go support Barca if you have a problem with Chelsea.
