Chelsea’s European journey in pictures – 2012/2013

CHELSEA 2-2 JUVENTUS – Oscar’s brace put Chelsea in charge, but goals from Arturo Vidal and Fabio Quagliarella’s equaliser earned a share of the spoils. It was the first time since 2007 that Chelsea had not started with a win in the Champions League.
NORDSJAELLAND 0-4 CHELSEA – Juan Mata opened the scoring, then Chelsea scored three times in the final 11 minutes through David Luiz, Juan Mata and Ramires to claim three points after a nervy encounter away in Denmark.
SHAKHTAR 2-1 CHELSEA – A late Oscar goal turned out to be a mere consolation after Alex Teixeira’s 3rd minute strike and Fernandinho’s second half effort in what was a dominating performance from the Ukrainians.
CHELSEA 3-2 SHAKHTAR – Victor Moses’ 94th minute winner kept Chelsea second in the group with two games to play, and it marked Shakhtar’s first defeat in the competition.
JUVENTUS 3-0 CHELSEA – A stunning performance from the Italian champions left Chelsea’s qualification hopes in tatters as the Bianconeri leapfrogged Di Matteo’s side into second place.
CHELSEA 6-1 NORDSJAELLAND – Goals from David Luiz, Gary Cahil, Juan Mata, Oscar and a double from Fernando Torres completed the group stage, with Chelsea given the unwanted dishonour of being the first European champions to be knocked out in the group stage of the following year’s competition.
SPARTA PRAGUE 0-1 CHELSEA – A late Oscar strike gave Chelsea an away goal in Prague, after just 33 seconds of coming on as a substitute for Juan Mata. Chelsea started strongly but were unable to break down the Czech side until the Brazilian hit his 6th European goal of the season.
CHELSEA 1-1 SPARTA PRAGUE – A 92nd minute Eden Hazard goal saved Chelsea from extra time and sent them into the last 16, after David Lafata’s early strike cancelled out Chelsea’s away goal from the week before.
STEAUA BUCHAREST 1-0 CHELSEA – A first half penalty converted by Raul Rusescu gave the home side victory in Romania.
CHELSEA 3-1 STEAUA BUCHAREST – Goals from Juan Mata – Chelsea’s 300th in Europe – John Terry and Fernando Torres helped Chelsea into the quarter-finals. The Spanish forward’s 70th minute strike finally gave Chelsea the foothold in the game after Vlad Chiriches had struck an away goal on the stroke of half time to make for a nervy climax to the game.
CHELSEA 3-1 RUBIN KAZAN – A Fernando Torres double and a Victor Moses effort gave Chelsea a strong lead to edge them towards the semi-finals, although Bibras Natkho’s first half penalty gave the Russians an away goal to keep their slim hopes alive.
RUBIN KAZAN 3-2 CHELSEA – Chelsea looked to be on course for the next round after Fernando Torres’ fifth minute strike cancelled Rubin’s away goal, but it took Victor Moses’ effort in response to Ivan Marcano’s goal early in the second half to steady the tie. Late strikes from Gokdeniz Karadeniz and Bibras Natkho gave Chelsea a scare, but the Londoners held on to reach the last four.
FC BASEL 1-2 CHELSEA – Victor Moses’ 12th minute header was wiped out by Fabian Schar’s penalty three minutes from time. Then up stepped David Luiz to score a stoppage-time free kick to give the Blues the advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.
CHELSEA 3-1 FC BASEL – Three goals in ten second half minutes helped Chelsea secure their place in the Europa League final after Mohamed Salah’s neat goal on the stroke of half time gave them a brief scare. Fernando Torres, Victor Moses and a stunning 25-yard effort from David Luiz finished off Basel as Chelsea booked their place in Amsterdam.
