David Luiz: The Life & times of a young Geezer

David Luiz signs a 5 year contract at Chelsea

In lieu of the larger-than-life geezer, David Luiz, signing a new 5-year contract at Chelsea keeping him at the club till 2017, let us recollect the criticisms, praises and the joy that the young central defender has faced since joining the club on transfer deadline day in January, 2011 for a fee of £25m.

David Luiz was delighted with his new Chelsea deal. The five-year agreement is worth a mooted £100,000-a-week.

Luiz said: “I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. It is a great club and I look forward to winning more trophies here. I want to play for a long time at the top level — which is what playing for Chelsea means. I love everything about the club and especially the fans, who have made me very welcome and given me great support.”

Delighted David!

David Luiz started his Chelsea career in 1-0 loss against Liverpool, coming on as a substitute replacing Jose Bosingwa. He was an unmistakable figure with his waving curly hair. He started his first game just next week, against Fulham in 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage. He became an instant hit with the fans for his dynamics. He got the Barclays man of the match award on his first start. Luiz scored his first Chelsea goal against Manchester United in 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. It was a stunning strike and showed that the center half was capable of scoring goals. After scoring again against Manchester City in the same month, he got the March Player of the month award. The rest of the season was quite good for him although he did get a little bit of criticism towards the end for a defensive disaster against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He has endured a lot of criticism since then, for his somewhat foolish tackling and his audacity to try and dribble the ball out of his own half, not opting to be a no-nonsense defender.

Last season, there were significant errors by the defender which cost Chelsea a lot of goals. He was criticized a lot for it, sometimes rightly, sometimes not. His response to the criticism was, “Criticism will not kill me.” and he said he would give his best every game and improve his performances. His performances in the latter part of the season became increasingly good and mature. He played a major role in Chelsea’s champions league success, from scoring the opening goal of the campaign to scoring a penalty in the final shootout. He has started this campaign well too, keeping 4 clean sheets in the premier league so far.

The young Brazilian has taken criticism very positively, working hard and improving. His attitude towards the game and life has always been a very larger-than-life one which makes the fans love him even more. He loves the game and enjoys it, which is always a very good approach towards it. I can see the lad becoming a future Chelsea great, if he keeps improving.
