Match preview: Chelsea face London rivals Brentford – a chance for youngsters to impress?

Chelsea are back in action tomorrow in what some could describe as a “dead rubber game”. Chelsea’s elimination from the UEFA Champions League means they have no silverware left to play for this season. However, manager Frank Lampard will want to see the players fight for the badge and the fans in the remaining Premier League matches which includes tough matches against the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle.

Brentford are the visitors to Stamford Bridge tomorrow and Thomas Frank’s team certainly have the ability to beat this deflated Chelsea side. Let’s take a look at where both sides are at ahead of tomorrow’s 8pm KO at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea :

The Blues are languishing in eleventh and have lost all four matches since Frank Lampard has returned. There has been no real uplift in performance or spirit since the Chelsea legend returned and he has not been helped ahead of this upcoming match with the news that Reece James, Mason Mount and Kai Havertz will miss the match tomorrow, with the former two individuals likely to be out for the rest of the season.

Lampard, in his press conference which was held at 1:30pm this afternoon, said: “Reece James unavailable, probably for the rest of the season, Mason the same, potential for the last game of the season. Kai is struggling a little bit with his knee, but should be training by the end of the week”

This news will come as a massive concern to Chelsea fans for the rest of the fixtures, particularly with Reece James’s exclusion. Cesar Azpilicueta is a club legend but does not have the required pace and intensity to play in many Premier League matches anymore, whilst Ruben Loftus Cheek would deputise at right wing-back should Lampard opt for a back 3.

Lampard is a man who likes to stick to his principles and every Chelsea fan will know his love for 4-3-3, but can he comfortably pick that without Reece James?

Much has been made of Noni Madueke being excluded from matchday squads recently, the winger, who was signed in the January transfer window for around £30m, has the raw talent to thrive in England, yet has seen himself receive limited chances since joining.

Lampard addressed a question on Madueke, Carney Chukweumeka and Mykhailo Mudryk, stating that they would get chances “If they deserve it”.

Frank will need to make sure he picks a balanced yet attacking lineup tomorrow as recent statistics show that Brentford could pose quite a test for the Blues.

“After winning seven of eight meetings with Brentford in all competitions between 1946 and 2021, Chelsea are winless in their last two matches against The Bee’s (Brentford) with one draw and one loss” (Google, 2023)

Brentford :

Thomas Frank’s side sit 10th in the Premier League table but are winless in their last six Premier League matches, with two draws and four defeats.

Brentford are known for their physicality and direct style of play and Chelsea will have to be extremely wary of danger man Ivan Toney upfront, the Englishmen has scored an impressive 19 goals in the Premier League, only behind Harry Kane and Erling Haaland in the golden boot race.

Other stars include David Raya in goal, who Chelsea have been linked with for a summer move, and Bryan Mbuemo, who is one of the most underrated forwards in the league.

As far as Chelsea are concerned, they will have to play some of their Football this season to break down a defence that is often sturdy with Ben Mee at the heart of everything good Brentford do.

Earlier on in the season, Brentford travelled to title favourites Manchester City and won 2-1, the fact that they limited such a talented team to a singular goal means that they have the capability to deliver on the biggest occasions in the Premier League.

The Bee’s are likely to use Chelsea’s absence of Reece James to attack the left flank with high flying left back Rico Henry potentially causing dangerous overlaps which could result in crosses for Ivan Toney to attack.

Though the defence of Brentford is certainly one of, if not their strongest point – they have failed to win each of their last four league matches that they have opened the scoring in, drawing three and losing one.

Having taken a look at the situations of both Brentford and Chelsea are how the game could pan out – what could the potential line-ups look like tomorrow?
