Match Report: Chelsea 3-1 Monterrey

Chelsea defeated Mexican side C.F. Monterrey 3-1 in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. Mata and Torres  scored one goal each and an own goal sealed the game.  The final will now be contested between Chelsea and Corinthians.

First half

Chelsea started the half positively, with Luiz (playing in midfield today) having a shot on goal in the early minutes. Luiz was actively involved in the attack once again when he threaded a pass through to Eden Hazard but the Belgian fired wide. Despite his miss, Hazard looked a threat and was beating Monterrey players for fun. Chelsea looked likelier to score, and the goal came with 20-odd minutes played. Lovely link-up play between Oscar and Cole saw Cole released into space. He cut the ball back to Mata who duly converted. Chelsea dominated after that but Monterrey did have a couple of chances towards the end of the first half. The half ended 1-0 in favour of Chelsea.

Second half

It only took a few seconds for Chelsea to double their lead. Hazard beat 2 men in succession on the left wing and passed to Torres. The Spaniard took a touch and slammed the ball with his left foot. The shot took a deflection and went in. 2-0 to Chelsea. Barely a minute later and the game was all over. A lovely ball from Torres released Mata on the right wing and his pass hit a Monterrey defender and went in. Own goal, but Chelsea were 3-0 up. Chelsea were now able to sit back and defend and the tempo of the game dropped. Lampard came on for Luiz, and almost scored from a long-range effort. Ferreira and Moses came on in quick succession for Mata and Torres, but the game seemed done and dusted. Monterrey did pull a goal back through De Negris in injury time. But it was a consolation goal and Chelsea ran out clear winners.

  1. David luiz looks alot better in midfield an he is picking out through balls form deep like he did with hazard and thats is more of what torres needs if he is to continue scoring

  5. It was a nice game right from the beginning. We didnt allow the Mexican to play their game and i think Mikel and Luiz pairing is awesome, although Hazard is my man of the match.

Rafa should play Luiz in the middle when JT comes back. Ability to distribute very well and has an eye for goal: as we already know 😉
