Mykhailo Mudryk’s new role could truly kick start his Chelsea career

Regarded as a flop after signing for a fee in the region of 65 million pounds (excluding add-ons), Mykhailo Mudryk just might have a new role in Mauricio Pochettino’s system.

Pochettino setting the team up in his usual 4-2-3-1 saw Mudryk play as the number 10, for the first time in his short Chelsea career.

The Ukrainian pacy attacker has always been profiled as an out-and-out Left Winger and often tasked with hugging the touchline but Poch’s experiment tonight looked convincing enough for at least another try.

When the team-sheets were rolled out and the names of 4 attackers were read out, it looked almost certain that Raheem Sterling was going to be assigned the number 10 role, just behind the lead striker Nicholas Jackson.

However, it was shocking to see Sterling shoe-horned out wide and Mudryk asked to play behind Jackson instead.

Despite playing as the central attacking midfielder for the first in Chelsea’s blue, Mykhaylo Mudryk looked to prove many wrong who had previously slandered the 23-year old as not “having a football brain”.

Doing a brilliant pressing job on the returning Ethan Ampadu from midfield and often joking Jackson as a front two pressing duo, Mudryk showed glimpses of what he could do with a consistent showing in the number 10 role.

Donning the number 10 jersey and playing in the number 10 role saw Mudryk register one goal from 2 shots with a 100% shot accuracy on the night.

Considering how thin Chelsea’s midfield is at the moment, it wouldn’t be surprising to find Mudryk getting a couple more run of games as the CAM (central attacking midfielder) as Pochettino continues to find the best position for the talented Ukrainian.
