Player ratings: Chelsea progress to Carabao Cup fourth round vs Brighton

BOOM! Chelsea finally broke their goalscoring hoodoo against a forever impressing Brighton in the 3rd round of the Carabao cup.

A quiet first half with little chances and possession , and as always questionable refereeing decisions, where Ugo luckily escaped a horror tackle.

The second half was inspired by a great through ball by Palmer to Jackson, who finally took his chance and slotted home in front of a roaring matthew harding lower.

Robert Sanchez- 4

Distribution was often slow and mishit passes straight to Brighton players, although wasnt helped much with a lack of movement, especially first half. Pulled off a crucial save at 1-0 and maintained his clean sheet.

Cucurella- 8

A slightly shaky first half despite not starting much, Mitoma got in through a few times but proved to be wasteful in the final third. However, an inspiring passionate 2nd half against his former side, proved vital in Chelsea keeping a clean sheet.

Aggressive tackles and leadership qualities down the right hand side were a key ingredient to tonights victory.

Disasi- 7

Solid throughout the game, dealt with aerial threat from crosses, was cool and composed on the ball and is quietly becoming a shrewd signing for the blues.

Colwill- 6

Quiet shaky, especially the first half with being too slow on the ball and distribution from the back often angered sections of the matthew harding stand. 2nd half came about and we saw a composed Colwill who dealt with one on ones fantastically and put his body on the line where it mattered most.

Chilwell- 7

Finally we got to see chilly back in his natural position and it was fair to say, we saw the old chilly again. A proper captains performance, even showed much more fight on the pitch by getting involved in an on pitch tussle with one of the brighton attackers.

Lets hope chilly keeps his spot at LB and poch sees how crucial he is to this young team.

Caicedo- 7.5

A presence, an engine and a leader in that midfield, combatted that midfield well especially 2nd half despite a slightly shaky first half. Context though… he was playing with a knee brace against villa. This is what we paid the big money for, so hold that Liverpool…

Ugo- 7

Like everyone elee, a bit nervy and shaky on the ball playing out the back. He Was class against wimbledon, was growing into it against Villa but todays performance against Brighton was the cherry on top for the development of this promising hungry midfielder.

Strong and communicated well with caicedo, won a few tackles in transition to keep out danger. Impressing progressively, cant wait to see more of him.

Mudryk- 5

An electric run in the first minute was one of Mudryks best moments in the game. His electric pace definitely showed during the game but there were times where his runs were ignored from players.

Mudryk drew a few crucial free kicks to ease some pressure Brightons attacks which helped us. although he fizzled out the 2nd half, hence the substitution.

Promising stuff from Mudryk , definitely one of our best attackers the moment.

Palmer- 7.5

The creative outlet we have been missing for ages, it proved with a brilliant turn and pass to Jackson. This kid is only going to get better if he gets more starts and if we feed him the ball and let him cook.

His acceleration is definitely underrated when he skipped past a few players, would love to see him more on set pieces and see what he can create from dead ball situations.

Jackson- 7.5

The difference maker in the result of this game and on paper the reason we are through to the next round playing blackburn. His work rate and hold up play was class this game, especially down the byline drawing defenders to him and allowing the likes of Palmer to create. Unluckily had a disallowed goal from a sensational move but we shouldnt be too concerned about Jackson, the talent is there, just needs to work on finishing chances which will come over time and experience.

Maatsen- 5

Anonymous to be honest during this game… didnt really create any clear cut chances but off the ball he never stopped and helped out cucurella when and where he could. Perhaps a loan would do Maatsen well for his development but more carabao and fa cups should help.

Poch- 7

Coached and defeated one of the best managers in world football currently in de zerbi. Started players in correct positions minus cucurella due to injuries/suspensions to reece and gusto. Was proactive in the 2nd half with subs but personally wouldve taken off maatsen instead of mudryk . Poch has to build on this vital win and win some fans back on side. 5 days to prep for fulham…

Broja- n/a

Had one good run down the line towards the end of the game. Lets hope we see more of him, provide competition for jackson

Enzo- 5

Controlled our midfield at a rough point during the game, glad he was rested most the game to be honest. As always played a few good passes and touches to relieve pressure.

Sterling- n/a (not enough to judge)

Gallagher- n/a (not enough to judge)
