What We Learned From The Juventus Match

What We Learned From The Juventus Match : 20.11.2012

A poor night for Roberto Di Matteo and The Blues saw Chelsea fall 3-0 to Juventus in Turin. The match result alters our Champions League destiny and makes qualifying for the knockout stages much harder.

ScorersĀ :
Quagliarella (38′)
Vidal (61′)
Giovinco (91′)

What We LearnedĀ :
1. Di Matteo could be on his way out.
2. John Terry is priceless.
3. Chelsea are too predictable.
4. The False 9 is not for Chelsea.
5. David Luiz must go.

1. Di Matteo could be on his way out: Roberto Di Matteo has been heavily criticized in recent weeks and after todays result, it will only pick up.Ā Ā A draw or win against Shakthar when the Italians travel to Ukraine on the final matchday would now confirm Chelsea’s elimination. Di Matteo has collected 2 points out of the last 4 Premier League matches. Certainly, a statistic no team wants to see. Roberto Di Matteo admitted to a bust up after the WBA match and has since (reportedly) lost the faith of Fernando Torres. This is very similar to Felipe Luiz Scolari and Andre Villas Boas’ tenures. To prevent a sacking, Di Matteo must turn the results around and qualify for the knockout stages. Failure to do that might lead Roman to the decision to sack RDM.

2. John Terry is priceless: With John Terry, Chelsea’s defense looks hard to beat. Without John Terry, Chelsea’s defense look easy to beat. That’s the difference. As David Luiz continues to be a walking disaster and the lack of defensive leadership, our defense is in ruts. Roberto Di Matteo has been dealt a severe blow with Terry’s suspensions and injuries this season and for him to turn it around, the defensive system has to turn around.

3. Chelsea are too predictable: The 4-2-3-1 system has been played constantly by Di Matteo throughout this season and it’s not working for us, as teams are starting to hold our midfield up therefore holding any offensive production up and making the job harder for Chelsea’s defense. Di Matteo has abandoned the idea of changing tactics and formation for matches and he continues to send the same formation out with different players. Roberto Di Matteo must take the 4-2-3-1 system and use it for the bigger occasions with the most proven squad.

4. The False 9 is not for Chelsea: The False 9 system (which Chelsea played v Juventus) has obviously failed, miserably. The system is one that is designed for passing teams and teams that dominate possession, Chelsea don’t do that on the road and rarely do it in general. Di Matteo must take this False 9 system and throw it out the window and revert back to The Bus or a new system instead of changing squads in important matches. Ā Di Matteo faces dilemma with the squad and his tactics, the False 9 is certainly one that doesn’t work for him and Chelsea.

5. David Luiz must go: David Luiz, I love his personality and he’s a funny guy, but he’s troubling Chelsea’s defense and he is making life without Terry, very tough. Here’s what Goal.com said about Luiz’s performance against Juventus : “His usual confident self on the ball but his positioning once again left something to be desired and his general demeanour was not of someone who fully appreciated the seriousness of the situation.”

Other PointsĀ :

1. Where is Marko Marin?!
2. January can’t come any sooner.
3. Di Matteo must beat Manchester City to reassure his position (for now).

  1. Lmao! Ervin! Just because Hazard was the front man, doesn't mean that was a false 9 system. Lmao! Gosh you're articles are always laughable! Di Matteo was clearly placing a defensive side and MAZACAR was only there to hit them on the break. That wasn't false 9 man. I do think RDM will be sacked on Monday if he loses to City on Sunday, which is likely seeing how bad the team's form is. Abramovich isn't a patient man and I think he might be sending our representives to speak to Guardiola in secrecy. Lol! This is such a bad time for Chelsea and I might find this amusing but inside I'm actually hurting. It all started with that Clattenburg asshole.

  3. I logged on here several times before I slept off, waiting for Ervin or Sherry to write something, and I finally couldn't sleep well, thanks to Juve. I must criticize RDM for not starting Torres. He's been horrible, but you never know when the goal will come. Look at the Shaktar Match, Torres scored an unlikely goal. Buffon and Chellini had no one chasing them down when they played from the back. Oscar, Mata and Hazard returned and invited the pressure, that's not to say I blame them for the loss. You can't play at this level and expect a result without a point man, who knows, Torres could have scored! Again, is Marin still lacking Match fitness? How the hell will he get Match fit without playing a match? I could be wrong, but if Chelsea had stuck with the team that played against Clattenburg and Man U, balancing offence and defence, we could have crated more chances, scored more goals, and possibly drawn or won this game. Juve was just as vulnerable too.

  5. Zane, this really hurts, more than I'm willing to admit. Buh I still think it would be rash to show RDM the door. Let's see what happens this season. I know, we might end up with 2 Trophies again if Falcao, Schurrie and possibly Neymar arrive in January, maybe with a new CB cos Luiz is unstable.

  7. Yes. There was no one to keep the defenders occupied since MAZACAR naturally always fell back as midfielders. I was screaming at the tv when Cech or a defender continously kicked the ball up field. TO WHO? THOSE SMALL PLAYERS? I've said it alot here, the team plays unsensable football most of the time. Those stupid early crosses from the right back are another example of stupid decisions being made by the players or RDM. HOW CAN SMALL PLAYERS GET ONTO A CROSS??? Bro look,I love RDM and I want him to stay but he has to work on the tactics or else he will walk. You know how the owner is.

Well, its not the end of the world. Can't blame RDM, he doesn't have a striker. Mikel had his best game for Chelsea. Don't think we can sign a top striker without reaching the knockout stages, it won't be good for our finances. Mancity are too strong.

The tactics was spot on since we lacked a striker. The long balls were made so that the little players could pick up the rebound and capitalise on errors. Mikel is not like Fellani to go up and hold the ball but he did hold up the ball a little deeper. The result has a 95% chance of being the same if we had started Torres. In fact it might have reduced our opportunities and defensive prowers by 75% because Torres lacks pace and can't hold up the ball either.

Excactly…torres has been criticized for lack of goals but in yesterdays match we saw his importance. his hardwork and staying on the heels of defenders creates space for MAZASCAR which we clearly lacked in Turin. Even if he doesnt score he chases the ball and makes run at defenders taking them away from the trio and have good.link up play with midfield. i know a striker has to score and we have to buy one in the january but at thr moment torres seems to be the best option.
    BTW RDM has been sacked.

  17. RDM is officially gone. The dramatic rise and subsequent fall of the European champions can all be seen on the tactics, in this case the clear lack of secondary tactics and team selections made by this man. As a fan of him when he played for us, I thought that he could be great as a caoch for us. Especially after he used his magic juju to deliver the biggest prize in Europe to the bridge, but alas the man had no greater plan beyond buying the most exciting squad in europe and hoping for the best.

In the bigining of the year we caught many teams off gaurd with our great attacking trio and our new style of play. what no one noticed was the lack of a secondary tactic against the big boys, note i dont think there is a need for a change in tactics, just a change in the way we deploy our current tactic. We need to restict the movement of the defenders more, both Iva and Luiz are guilty of letting their defensive duties slip buy getting involved in attacking plays too often.

I pray that Roman can bring Pep to the bridge, he's our only hope as a caoch. In jan we need to recall our loans and maybe, just maybe, make that move for Falcao.

  19. “Di Matteo could be on his way out”, OK. We will see if Bentez will win champions league and FA cup or any cup. it is shame and selfish.

  21. No worries, Jo. Posting on the wrong tarehd will simply introduce you to Lois, one of our 10K Day veterans. I know Lois won’t mind at all. That’s good news that you can make it tomorrow. And some nerves are understandable the first time we’ve all had those. But you’ll find the company reassuring. See you then!~ Milli
