What We Learned: Fulham

20130417-231259.jpg
Chelsea won the west London derby against Fulham 0-3 at Craven Cottage for the first time since the 0-2 win in the double-winning 2009/10 season. David Luiz opened the scoring with a stunning long-range strike on his 100th appearance for the Blues.

And two goals from John Terry in each half ensured a precious 3 points that helped us leap-frog arsenal in to 3rd position in the Barclays Premier League table. Our next trip will be against Liverpool away at Anfield Road, but Rafael Benitez didn’t field a weak team for that reason & his decision paid off as we won the west London derby against Fulham to take home all three points. And as every other matches, here are 5 things we learned from Chelsea’s win against Fulham:

1. Fernando Torres’ confidence is very high at the moment.
20130417-202342.jpg
Fernando Torres didn’t score against Fulham, but he assisted John Terry for our goal in second half & he has been working so well in the past 3 weeks in all games he played in. His movements had been creating danger & space in fulham’s defense throughout the 90 mins. We have seen the way he influenced the outcome of our home win against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge & also against Man City at Wembley. Rafa Benitez said in a pre-game press conference that strikers shouldn’t always score in order to help the team as long as they are contributing. And that’s very true because other midfield/attacking players like Mata, Hazard & Lampard have been scoring goals this season. And no one would blame Torres if he is trying hard to help the team, be it scoring or assisting, it’s not a problem. And his boost of confidence is a good sign for chelsea as he is showing desire & hunger that he lacked for the early parts of the season.

2. John Terry & Lampard always give their all when called upon
20130417-231648.jpg
Captain John Terry & vice-captain, Frank Lampard have not featured in most games recently as they have been used to in their time at Stamford Bridge. Rafa Benitez favors David Luiz & Cahill/Ivanovic in center back positions in top matches, mostly in the premier league. When asked by the media in January, Terry said that he will do everything to help the team, whether it is by starting or being a substitute. Lampard has featured more than Terry in most games this season but, his contract will be expiring this summer & he has been strongly linked with a move away from the club. But, If their performance in the game against Fulham will be any indication, it is that the two veterans are always willing to give their all & fight for their places at the club. With Terry scoring two goals at Cravon Cottage, we hope that Abramovic realizes keeping the two player at the bridge until their retirement will be very beneficial for the club.

3. Attacking depth has been lacking in the squad

With the congested fixture pile-up we have had this season, this squad is too small to manage & perform at a top level in all games. Oscar came on for Eden Hazard in 2nd half at Craven Cottage. Oscar played the whole 90 minutes against Man City at Wembley & is likely to start against Liverpool on Sunday’s premier league fixture. So, fatigue can be a big factor for a club that competes on many fronts through out the season. And the impending move of Andre Schrulle from Bayer Livurkusen is a good news for all the fans. The 22 year old German forward can play in the wings & will provide a much needed depth & quality in the attacking ranks of the squad.

4. Juan Mata is in a run for the FA player of the season

As Rafael Benitez suggested in the pre-match press conference, Juan Mata is a perfect candidate to win the Football associations player of the season award for the season, 2012/13. Mata has been playing two matches per week while other players for the run-in such as Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez had participated in 15 less matches for their club this season. And just like the whole season, Mata delivered a great performance against Fulham. He has been difficult to handle for Fulham’s defenders by his dangerous runs through the box. Rafa went on to compare him with Blues’ legend Gianfranco Zola. And it’s clear to see the similarities between the two as they are very intelligent on the pitch, even though they lack a physical prowess( which didn’t affect such players with gifted vision & sublime touch on the ball).

5. David Luiz turned in a strong perfomance on his 100th appearance for Chelsea!
20130417-231536.jpg
David Luiz opened the scoring on the 30 minutes by lashing a sublime strike on Fulham’s goal after receiving a pass from Eden Hazard 30 yards away. Luiz has been very influential in many games for Chelsea this season. He shows no tiredness in every single game he plays in and gives his all to the club. He had been tipped by Captain John Terry two years ago tyat he will be Chelsea captain in the future. And undoubtedly, he is the right man & the right leader to take over the arm band from John Terry when the latter decides to hang-up his boots. Luiz has a leadership ability & a fantastic attitude to lead this young blues squad through to the next decade. He signed a contract extension That goes through 2017 and he is committed to give his all for our shirt. He is admired and liked by all fans & his team mates alike. And His performance through out the 90 minutes against Fulham indicates he is at a high level of fitness and we can expect the same type of influential performances from him as he is just 25 years old.

    good one for the blues.

  9. Finally looks like the Schurrle news has gotten to Oscar and Moses. Great performance from the lads. The Schurrle deal is a tricky one bcuz it would make Torres work rate less important, and creating room for a lazy striker like ******

  10. raufmahmud

    why not play two strikers
